Who are we?
Director
Mike Anestis, Ph.D. received his bachelor's degree from Yale University in 2002. He then received his Ph.D. in the clinical psychology program at Florida State University in 2011, under the guidance of Dr. Thomas Joiner. Dr. Anestis currently serves as as the Executive Director of the New Jersey Gun Violence Research Center and as an Associate Professor of Urban-Global Public Health at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. His research interests focus primarily on suicidal behavior.

Sarah Butterworth, M.A. is a fifth year SEDL doctoral student. Sarah is particularly interested in the role of firearms in suicide, with a specific focus on military populations. She is completing her predoctoral internship at the Pittsburgh VA.

Project Manager
Kayla Wagler, B.S. is the project manager for Project Safe Guard. She plays an invaluable role in the daily needs of our current clinical trial. Kayla plans to pursue a PhD in clinical psychology in the near future focusing on suicide prevention intervention research. Her interests include interactions of anxiety and suicide, and the specific needs of minority populations.

Lauren Khazem, PhD. is a postdoctoral fellow at the National Center for Veteran Studies Her work focuses primarily on suicide risk in individuals with physical disabilities as well as military suicide. She completed her internship year at the Minneapolis VA.
Keyne Law, PhD. is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology at Seattle Pacific University. Her work focuses primarily on how the interplay of cognitive processes, emotion dysregulation, and physiological states impacts suicidal behavior and non-suicidal self-injury. She completed her internship at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC).
Brittney Assavedo, M.A. is a staff psychologist at the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA hospital in Jackson, MS, where she also completed her predoctoral internship.
Claire Houtsma, PhD. is a staff psychologist at the New Orleans VA. Her work focuses on a variety of potential suicide risk factors, including violent video game play, locus of control, religiosity, and access to firearms. She completed her predoctoral internship at the New Orleans VA.
Hyejin Jin, PhD. is a postdoctoral fellow at the Capital Institute for Cognitive Therapy. Hyejin is primarily interested in cognitive (e.g. rumination) and physiological (e.g., pain persistence) risk factors for suicide and non-suicidal self-injury. She completed her predoctoral internship at the University of Texas Heath Science Center - San Antonio.
